Artist: George Lothian Hall (British 1825-1888).
Title: A Stormy Sea (Signed and Dated 1876).
Medium: Watercolour on paper.
Framed Size: Height 55 cm x Width 89 cm x Depth 2 cm
Image Size: Height 34 cm x Width 69.5 cm
Condition: This work is in good condition with overall even toning to the sheet. Conservation framed with acid free mat and backing board, glazed with anti-reflective invisible glass “ArtGlass AR70” which has UV block of 70% visible light transmission of 99% and a reflection of 1%.
Provenance: Purportedly, The Property of Lady Fairfax (according to inscription verso to original mat).
Private Collection Sydney.

About: George Lothian Hall was known as a water colour artist. This dramatic seascape by the Welsh artist is a fine example of his work. The subtle depiction of sheets of rain across the picture are quite beautiful, combined with powerful waves and a flock of seagulls. This painting captures the power and beauty of the British coastline.

Hall’s works are held in the collection of the Yale Centre for British Art, of which 16 of the works are of Gibraltar.
