Artist: After Alexander Cabanel (French 1823-1889).
Title: Cleopatra testing poison on condemned slaves.
Medium: Watercolour and bodycolour on board.
Framed Size: Height 27 cm x Width 34 cm x Depth 2.3 cm.

Condition: The painting has overall even toning with some fading of colour. Now fully protected in a gold frame and behind UV-resistant museum art glass with acid-free mats.
Provenance: Private Collection Sydney, Australia.

About: A delightful and faithful small copy of the original oil painting. Cabanel painted mainly historical, classical and religious subjects in the academic style. His oeuvre includes Shakespeare’s Ophelia with his version often shown compared to the Pre-Raphalelite artists, John William Waterhouse and John Everett Millais. Cabanel’s most recognised work is arguably “The Fallen Angel”, which was inspired by John Milton's poem Paradise Lost (1667) a work about the Devil's defiance of God.
