About: Russian icon of the Deisis a Byzantin iconographic theme, which means "prayer" or "supplication". A traditional iconic representation of Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator the blessing Jesus is placed between the Virgin Mary, on his right, and Saint John the Baptist, with other saints adorning including six saints on the borders. After the 9th century, the composition of this icon starts to incorporate patterns of images associated with the Imperial court, so Jesus is depicted as an emperor, in majesty. With this new emphasis on the intercession, the Deësis became an important element in the representations of the Last Judgement, where the Virgin Mary and Saint John intercede for the humankind.
