Russian School (Early 19th Century) Scene from the life of Christ

$0.00
Sold

Artist: Unknown (Russian School, Early 19th Century).
Title: Scene from the Life of Christ.
Medium: Tempera on wooden panel.
Condition: All wear is consistent with age and use. Evidence of some old inactive insect activity verso. Some minor losses with a bow to the panel due to missing shponki (slats).
Provenance: Purportedly Ex Collection of Alitalia CEO, the collection was held in Japan for several decades and later moved to Australia.

About: The Icon portrays the telling of the Gospel from God himself to his followers. The reference to Jesus being the Son of God is enforced by the actions of Christ in the lower section of the panel, pointing up at his own heavenly embodiment.

The icon has been well-painted with well-preserved remnants of extensive gilding. There is a nail to the centre of the work that would have held on the Riza, and also several iron tacks surrounding the edges of the piece for mounting the Riza. Verso to the panel there are inscriptions carved into the wood which appear to be in Russian and would most likely be either notes for the craftsman in reference to the icon’s strict composition or possibly referring to its origins, owner and location.
