Venitian Polychrome Wooden Blackamoor

$1,400.00

Artist: Venetian (18th/19th Century)
Title: Venitian Blackamoor Wall Brackets
Medium: Hand-carved wood, polychrome painted.
Size: Height 43 cm x Width 28 cm x Depth 20 cm
Condition: Both brackets show age and use with wear to the paint.

About: These Venetian carved wall brackets are delightful and full of character, with a beautifully aged patina that shows age and use with the loss of paint. The shaped top platforms are supported by crouching male figures with flowing drapery to the sides. The spacious top shelf is ideal for candles, flowers, and other decorative items. These are of a good size and would make a statement on any wall. Contact us for pricing and further images.

Blackamoor is an art form that depicts highly decorative, exotic non-white figures, often bejewelled black African men. These painted figures appeared in various homewares and decorative furnishings. They also appear in jewellery design and were particularly popular in the workshops of Venice.

In Shakespeare's Othello, the term "Moor" refers to Othello's ethnicity and background, signifying that he is a dark-skinned individual from North Africa, possibly of Arab or Berber descent.
