Medium: Orichalcum (early Roman copper & zinc), this item has been XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) tested for authenticity and complies with items of the period.

Condition: Good and commensurate with age, the lamp has a rich attractive verdigris green patination.
Provenance: Private Collection Sydney.

About: This is a fine example of a 1st-3rd Century Roman oil lamp, the detail of the owl on the lamp symbolises both knowledge and light. The owl represents the Roman deity Minerva and is a sacred creature known as the “Owl of Minerva”.

This oil lamp is made of Orichalcum a mix of copper and zinc, these lamps were a status symbol in the ancient world. Wealthy families used and displayed lamps made of metal, a higher quality material than stone, clay, shell, or glass; many had intricate or exotic imagery.
