Australian School (Late 19th) Sirens Mermaid

$7,000.00

Artist: Australian School, Late 19th - Early 20th Century.
Title: Sirens.
Medium: Oil on board.
Framed Size: Height 63 cm x Width 76.5 cm x Depth 3.5 cm.
Image Size: Height 37 cm x Width 50 cm.
Condition: The painting is in good condition. The bespoke frame has a warp along the length of the frame, and there are some repairs, all commensurate with age. It is glazed with anti-reflective invisible glass ArtGlass AR70, which is UV-resistant.
Provenance: Private Collection, Sydney, Australia.

About: A mythological painting possibly recalling a scene from Homer’s Odyssey with a siren mermaid, reminiscent of the works of Australian artist Rupert Bunny (1864-1947) in both subject, technique and finish. During the late 19th century, Rupert Bunny relocated from Melbourne to London and Paris. Mermaids Dancing (1896), Siren 1889 and The Forerunners 1895 are all notable Bunny works of a similar period.

Both the painting and the bespoke handmade and painted frame are exceptional, and a true conversation piece.
