About: Dated 1923, this still life European impressionist painting of a jug and fruit captures the qualities of the movement. The immediate impression of the scene is depicted with the play of light and its reflection, and short brush strokes defining the shape and tones of the subject.

Impressionism was a mid-19th-century movement that originated in Paris through a series of independent exhibitions by a group of artists. Initially, they faced opposition from the established art community, but this became a prominent movement over time. The name Impressionism comes from the title of Claude Monet's painting Impression, Soleil Levant (Impression Sunrise).
