Artist: Unknown (Late 18th early 19th Century).
Title: Great Japanese Monk Kukai - Japanese Buddhist Monk.
Medium: Clay Pottery.
Size: Height 12.5 cm x Width 12.5 cm x Depth 7.5 cm.
Condition: This work has original paint loss and missing beads from the hand. The condition is commensurate with age, there are no chips or losses to the figure.
Provenance: Private Collection Sydney.

About: Clay pottery sculpture of Kukai, the Japanese Buddhist monk who is revered as one of the intellectual giants in Japanese history. The handcast piece dating from at least the early 19th century is of a lovely quality and condition, considerate of the work’s age and medium.
Traces of pigment can be seen in the robe, with the only major loss being the absence of beads in the left hand of Kukai. The Great Japanese Monk, also referred to posthumously as Kobo-Daishi, The Grand Master who propagated the Buddhist Teaching), 774–835.
