About: Born at Eaglemont, Victoria in 1913, Hayward Veal attended art classes with Archibald Colquhoun and Colquhoun’s own mentor, Max Meldrum. Meldrum was the founder of Australian Tonalism, a representational painting style that became popular in Melbourne during the interwar period. Along with Veal, Clarice Beckett, Colin Colahan, Percey Leason and Nora Heysen were also students of Meldrum.
During the 1940s Veal was an active member of the Sydney art scene and regularly gave lectures at the AGNSW. In 1951 he travelled to Europe with his wife Minka Wolman and stayed for 17 years, settling down in London where Veal quickly gained a reputation on the international art scene. His first London exhibition was in 1952 at the Piccadilly Gallery, where he held annual exhibitions up until 1959.
Due to his growing international reputation, Veal exhibited in several cities around the world. His first solo exhibition was held in Melbourne in 1937, followed by exhibitions in Sydney, Brisbane, South Australia and London. Veal’s first of many solo shows in America was held in 1962 in New York. Three years later, in 1965, Rome was the city of his first solo show in Europe. Hayward Veal is represented in numerous prominent Australian and international collections.
