About: Born in Auxerre, Etienne Jeaurat spent his formative years in Rome under the guidance of Nicolas Vleughels, French painter and director of the Académie de France in Rome. Vleughels, a good friend of Antoine Watteau, was a major influence on Etienne Jeaurat. Jeaurat enjoyed considerable success during his career painting portraits, still life, mythological, historical, and popular genre scenes. The genre scenes were in the style of David Teniers the Younger and Jeaurat was often referred to as the French Teniers.
