About: La Cuisinere( The cook), a spontaneous render of the camp cook has been painted un plein air, the artist’s treatment of light on the standing figure is outstanding. A posthumous inscription verso states the subject to be the cook of the 15th lancers, also known as Cureton’s Multani's, who was a cavalry regiment of the British Indian army. The inscription also states the artist being that of a French interpreter.

Although the author of this painting remains unknown, the work is very suggestive of the influence of Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) specifically recalling works created in and around his WW1 deployment. Comparable works for reference from, Vuillard: The Inexhaustible Glance: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings and Pastels, Volume III.
