About: Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1st Baronet (Born Gottfried Kniller, 8 August 1646 Died 19 October 1723) was the leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, he was also the court painter to the British monarchy from Charles II to George I. For much of his career, Sir Godfrey Kneller would hold a monopoly on the portraiture of British sovereigns and is regarded as one of the most important British artists of the 17th and early 18th centuries.

This work entitled "Portrait of a Lady" is housed in its original gilt wood frame. The inscription verso of "Campbell" may relate to the sitter although this can not be confirmed. The piece is indicative of the works of Kneller, most notably the brushwork and finish along with the portrait’s subject and facial features which are often identified as a constant in Kneller’s work. This piece was held in a London private collection until 2017, when it had undertaken restoration inclusive of relining. The conservation work that was carried out is of an exceptional standard as the piece only required a minor surface clean upon inspection by our conservation partners. A stunning portrait and a piece of British history.
