About the Artist: Jacob van Hulsdonck was a Flemish painter who played a role in the early development of the genre of still-life paintings of fruit, banquets and flowers.
He spent his formative years in the town of Middleburg, the Netherlands. There he would first study painting and by 1608 he would return to his native Antwerp and join the painters' guild of St Luke becoming the master of a prosperous studio that specialised in predominately still life painting. Hulsdonck’s reputation was built on exceptional depictions of fruit pieces composed of perfect, brightly coloured plums, grapes, and peaches on ordinary tabletops. Viewers adored his paintings for their simple beauty, textures, and accuracy. Van Hulsdonck elevated mundane subjects into exquisite works of art and brought the beauty of simplicity into the homes of the Dutch middle class.
