About the Artist: Holbein was one of the most accomplished portraitists of the 16th century, he spent almost two decades of his life in England painting the nobility of the Tudor court. He was taught by his father, Hans Holbein the Elder and became a member of the Basel Artists' Guild in 1519. Holbein was known for his travels and is recorded in Lucerne, northern Italy and throughout France. In these years he would produce woodcuts and fresco designs as well as panel paintings. He also notably designed jewellery and metalwork.

About the Painting: This portrait of Henry VIII is a lost work by Hans Holbein the Younger, the original image was destroyed by fire in 1698, but is well known through many copies. It is one of the most iconic images of Henry and consequently one of the most well-known portraits of a British monarch. The original work was created in 1536–1537 as part of a mural showcasing the Tudor dynasty at the Palace of Whitehall, Westminster.

All the remaining copies of the painting are today attributed to other artists and the circles and workshop of Holbein, they vary dramatically in their quality and faithfulness to the original source as most of the reproductions only copy the image of Henry.
